Great Bridal Showers

A Bridal Shower Recipe Book

The custom of the bridal shower has been with us for a long time, originating with the Dutch and spreading across continents so that it became a part of our tradition too. The shower itself has a number of traditions attached to it including who should be invited (typically only close friends and relatives of the bride), serving food and dessert, and playing games. The bridal shower recipe, where each guest attending the shower is asked to bring with her a copy of her favorite recipe, is another nice custom associated with bridal showers.

For this custom, guests are asked to bring a handwritten or typed copy of their favorite recipe to give the bride so that she may start her own collection of recipes. While some may view this custom as a bit old-fashioned since nowadays both husbands and wives do the cooking, it should be understood that the bridal shower recipes collected can and probably will be used by both the bride and groom.

Bridal or wedding shower recipes can be for any type of dish. They can be side dishes, entrees, desserts, salads, appetizers, etc. The wedding shower recipe that each guest brings can be simple or complicated, quick or time consuming to make, as long as it is chosen with thoughtfulness.

The hostess or hostesses for the bridal shower will be responsible for collecting all of the wedding shower recipes from the guests for the bride. The collected recipes can then either be simply put away into a folder or recipe box or, better yet, used to create a bridal shower recipe book for the bride (and groom).

There are many ways to do this, but the simplest way is to insert each of the recipes into a photo album that has been divided into cooking categories (cookies, cakes, poultry, soups etc.). The best type of photo album for this project is one that has slots for each picture or, in this case, each wedding shower recipe.

There are many bridal themed photo albums to choose from that will suit just such a project so finding the album won't be difficult. If each guest is asked to write or print the recipe on a standard 4 x 6 index card then each card will fit nicely into the album. This saves work for both the hostess, as she won't have to rewrite or type the recipes onto cards that fit the album, and allows the bride to keep the original wedding shower recipes submitted by her friends and family.

The bridal shower recipe book is one of the nicest gifts that can be given to the bride and groom. It is practical, attractive, generous, and a lovely keepsake from a special day. Just make sure that when you send out the invitations a note is included about bringing a favorite recipe.

Guests are always happy to comply. Who knows, some of the recipes may be so good that the guests may want a copy of the bridal shower recipe book too.
